RESTORE - RENEW

A comprehensive, individualized program offered to cancer patients and survivors

EXERCISE:  A KEY COMPONENT IN YOUR TREATMENT REGIMEN

There was a time when people receiving treatment for cancer were told to take it easy, to not even consider exercising.  Those days are gone.  Research has shown that exercise of the right type and intensity can actually increase vitality and aid in the battle against cancer by improving immune function.  It is really no longer an option.  A cancer patient who seeks high quality life and control of cancer must add exercise to their treatment regimen.

This doesn’t mean that it’s time to train for your first ever marathon.  At least, not yet.  Rather, begin with breathing and flexibility exercises.  There are even exercises called restoratives that require only the effort it takes to set it up.  After the set up, the participant relaxes, breathes, and lets the body’s circulatory systems go to work on healing.

Exercise classes provide cancer patients with further group support with classmates as well as physical and mental stimulation.  Exercise has been shown to decrease depression, release tension, assist in keeping levels of commitment and will power high which further improves immune function.  Exercise increases the anti-cancer action of macrophages, the cells involved in immune response.

To begin, check with your physician, then make an appointment with an exercise specialist to determine the exercise that is appropriate for your energy level and stage of disease.  Be sure that it is an activity you enjoy.  You are more likely to adhere to your plan and you will have more fun.  The Center offers exercise designed specifically for those with cancer, but other classes may be more interesting, or suitable, for you.
